Increase your flexibility and become more contented

“Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”  George Bernard Shaw.

The start of a new year is a good time to review your routines and establish some new habits.

Over the years, I’ve coached some people who’ve conceded that when they get busy and stressed, they can become very single minded. They admit that they become inflexible in their approach in pursuing some goals. As a result, they stick rigidly to their ideas and plans.

Being too stubborn in their dealings, had a detrimental impact on their relationships with others.  It also made them lose perspective and their vision became very tunnelled. On some occasions, it meant that they stopped listening to the valuable input and ideas of others.  They became defensive and this had a negative impact on their relationships, as people kept their distance and gave them a wide berth!

Sadly, some people find it challenging to show their vulnerability and admit that they made have made a mistake. Often this can be traced back to their upbringing and conditioning. Clients have told me of instances where they have got so caught up in a goal that they have been unwilling to let go of it. They have admitted that even when they have known deep down that their plans weren’t working, they haven’t tried something new. This came down to a need to be seen to be right.

The following story illustrates what can happen when you’re too rigid in your thinking. It also demonstrates how having a willingness to change direction can be beneficial:

On a dark and foggy night in the midst of a stormy sea, the captain of a ship spotted what seemed to be the light from another ship in the distance. He quickly went to his station and flashed a message across the water, “Change your course twenty degrees north.”

No sooner had he done this than a reply flashed back, “Change your course twenty degrees south.”

The captain became angry and flashed back, “I am captain and a commander in the naval forces, and I say change your course twenty degrees north.” The responding message was signalled back, “I am a seaman first class with no commander, and I say change your course twenty degrees south.”

This infuriated the captain who now signalled, “I am a battleship, and I say change your course twenty degrees north.” There was a brief pause as the angry captain awaited the reply.

Finally, the response came, “I say change your course twenty degrees south, I am a lighthouse!”

If ever you catch yourself being too rigid in your approach, bring the metaphor of the battleship and the lighthouse to mind. Remind yourself of the consequences of being inflexible.

In my experience people that are too inflexible show signs of being discontented and unhappy. It can also lead to them feeling anxious and overwhelmed.

The people with the most flexible approach to goals, relationships and life in general, tend to be happier and more contented. They also enjoy a greater connection with others. This enables them to make the most of life and fulfil more of their potential.

This week have a think about if you need to change some of your habits and routines. Ask yourself these questions:-

  • What do you need to stop doing?
  • What do you need to do differently?
  • What do you need to start doing?

You can also use these questions to review your approach to a goal that you are currently pursuing.

24 Pieces of Simple Wisdom to Help You to Flourish in 2024

“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” Vincent Van Gogh.

A New Year is almost upon us. Last year was a challenging year for many people as a result of the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Inflation continued to be high and interest rates increased leading to higher mortgage costs for lots of households. There were many industrial disputes and long health service waiting lists.

Lots of things were out of our control. What is always within our control is our reaction to external events and the choices that we make. These reactions and choices will determine the outcomes we experience in life. It’s vital that we take 100% responsibility for our choices and that we maintain a focus on the things that we can control.

Below are 24 pieces of simple wisdom to help you to flourish in 2024.

  1. Have a clear vision for your personal and professional life

Get clear on what you want and would like to experience and achieve.

  1. Play to your strengths

Spend more time thinking about what you are good at, rather than the things you need to improve or are not so good at.

  1. Create your definition of happiness and success

This will allow you to live life your way and provide a framework for you to review your personal progress.

  1. Quit comparing yourself to others

This will save a lot of mental energy and focus. Have you ever compared yourself to someone else and found them to be exactly the same as you? We are all unique.

  1. Spend more time in the present moment

Quit worrying about the past or living life too far in the future. Don’t let yesterday take up too much of today.

  1. Let go of things that you can’t control

Focus your time and energy on things that you can control and influence.

  1. Be discerning with the use of your time and energy

Ensure that you do things that make you feel good and increase your energy. Spend time with people that increase rather than drain your energy.

  1. Change your inner critic’s job description

Speak to yourself in a kind and encouraging way. Develop your inner critic into an inner coach. Develop a positive, confident mindset and attitude to life. Believe in yourself and embrace opportunity.

  1. Develop an attitude of gratitude

Take time regularly to really appreciate all that you have in your life and give thanks. Remember to celebrate your successes, achievements and good fortune. Count your blessings often.

  1. Trust your instincts

If your instincts say be brave and go for it, listen to that wisdom. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. If your intuition is telling you to be careful than heed that warning.

  1. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

You can’t do it all alone. Get help for your areas of limitation and gaps in your knowledge and resources. See it as a strength to ask for help when you need it.

  1. Put yourself first sometimes

Learn to say no and know when you need to recharge your energy levels. Take care of your needs first. Remember the safety announcement on a plane tells passengers to put their oxygen mask on first in an emergency, so they can help others!

  1. Remember that life is short and enjoy the simple things in life

Do what makes you happy and are passionate about. Follow your dreams, spend time with those you love and remember that quite often the best things in life are free

  1. Be impeccable with your word

Say only what you mean and promise only what you will fulfil. Speak with integrity and avoid negative language and gossip.

  1. Be yourself (everyone else is taken)

Be true to yourself and your values. Remember that you are unique and special. As Judy Garland once famously said, “it is better to be a first-rate version of yourself than a second-rate version of somebody else.”

  1. Make some time for exercise

Good health is the real wealth in life, so focus on your health and well-being. A brisk daily walk or run is a great way to do 30 minutes exercise.

  1. Keep your outlook fresh

Get into the habit of spending 15 minutes each month to ask yourself- What do I need to change? What do I need to start doing? What do I need to do more of? What do I need to stop doing?

  1. Develop your positivity muscle

What you focus on and nurture grows. Therefore, in order to develop your positivity, keep a positivity book to record your achievements, positive experiences, feedback and instances of good fortune.

  1. Be kind

Doing unconditional and unexpected random acts of kindness for others create good feelings. They can be simple gestures and don’t have to cost money. Such good deeds help to create a better world. Have a kind and generous spirit.

  1. Make room for fun and laughter

See the funny side of life more often. There is much research available to validate the health benefits of frequent laughter. Make some time to watch funny movies or tv shows or read humorous books.

  1. Live now – procrastinate later

Quit over thinking and over analysing things and get into action. Regularly ask yourself “what would I do today if I were brave?” Follow up on your ideas and action plans. The fortune is always in the follow up!

  1. Have a technology free day each week

Give your brain a break and switch off your phone, computers, tablets and avoid social media. Spend time outdoors instead or use the space to be really present in your activities or conversations with family and friends.

  1. Journal regularly

Capture your thoughts and feelings. If you don’t write stuff down, a piece of wisdom or an insight could be lost forever.

  1. Mediate daily

Spend some quiet time to reflect and clear your mind, even if it’s just 5 minutes each day. It will help you to feel calm, grounded and give you a sense of purpose.

I hope that you’ve found these suggestions to be useful and they help you to experience the best possible year. This week, why not spend a few moments to think about which of the tips that you would like to focus more attention on this year.

Happy New Year, I hope that this year is a happy, healthy and fulfilling one for you.
