National Forgiveness and Happiness Day October 7th 2024

“When you forgive, you in no way change the past, but you sure do change the future.” Bernard Meltzer.

National Forgiveness and Happiness Day is marked every year on October 7th in the US. It’s an occasion that celebrates forgiveness and the amount of happiness this action can bring to one’s life.

Whilst many people hold onto grudges and fantasise about revenge, studies have revealed that the best way to heal is to actually forgive the person that hurt you. Being unforgiving will only be harmful to you in the long run and will have no impact on the people that hurt you.

It was the poet Alexander Pope who said “To err is human; to forgive divine.” However, it isn’t always easy to forgive when people cause us pain, let us down, hurt or disappoint us. Equally we may not find it easy to forgive ourselves when we make a mistake.

The pain we feel after someone has betrayed us may temporarily get us to believe that there is no way we can ever imagine a situation where we could forgive them. Situations can haunt us for the rest of our lives unless we find forgiveness inside ourselves.

The author Wayne Dyer said this on the subject:

You practice forgiveness for two reasons: to let others know that you no longer wish to be in a state of hostility with them and to free yourself from the self-defeating energy of resentment. Send love in some form to those that have wronged you and notice how much better you feel.”

When we hold onto bad feelings and resentment it can lead us to have a heavy feeling and can deplete our energy levels. It can cause us to mis-trust people, keep us stuck and prevent us from taking risks. When we let go of things it can help us to feel lighter and re-energised.

Forgiveness isn’t about saying what the other person did was right, nor is it condoning someone’s bad behaviour. It doesn’t mean that you have to forget what someone did or that it was ok for them to do it. Forgiveness is all about releasing the negativity and bad feelings that results from the hurt you experienced by letting go of the emotional baggage.

We can feel a sense of comfort when we release and therefore, we do it not just for the other person but to help ourselves. When we hold onto bad feelings, anger or resentment it hurts us and this negatively impacts our life experience. It harms us far more than it does the person who caused the pain initially.

Forgiving enables us to live in the present moment rather than reliving the energy of the past. It helps us to move on without feeling angry, bitter or resentful. As a result, we regain our personal power because when we express anger or resentment towards others, we are giving up our power to them.

It’s a bit like having a chain around your neck and held in place by the person who wronged you. When you forgive, you break the chain and the hold the person or situation has on you. This frees up the unhealthy energy.

Given the mind-body link, holding onto old emotions has a negative impact on our body and immune system. Therefore, forgiveness and releasing has really positive physical and mental health benefits too.

I mentioned earlier that sometimes we need to forgive ourselves. We may have taken a decision that didn’t work out, made a mistake or tried something new and it had a poor outcome. This can leave us feeling fearful and angry with ourselves. All this negative energy and reliving the situation in our minds doesn’t change it or the outcome we’ve experienced.

Our good and bad experiences in life enable us to grow and evolve. Whatever happens in life helps us to learn lessons and insights. They build our wisdom. We can use our set-backs and mistakes to beat ourselves up, make ourselves feel bad and keep us stuck in life. Alternatively, we can use them to inform and shape our future decisions. We can learn from experiences and apply our lessons practically.

We always have a choice in life. It’s within our gift to choose whether to forgive and let go. If we allow the wrong doing, the mistake or pain to follow us into the future, it will affect our mood and relationships. It’s within our control to decide whether to be resentful, regretful or let the situation go.

Forgiveness promotes feelings of calm and inner peace and helps us to restore our trust in ourselves and others. It helps us to move on positively and experience all that life has to offer without feelings of regret and resentment.

This week, why not take a few moments to reflect and consider if you would like to forgive someone or indeed yourself.

Do you have some clutter that you need to let go of?

“Our life is frittered away by detail… simplify, simplify.” Henry David Thoreau.

As we are moving towards the final quarter of 2024 and Autumn in the UK, the trees will start shedding their leaves. It’s a good time for us to pause and consider if there is some clutter that we can shed to create some space to experience new things.

Life can get chaotic and busy sometimes. As a result, we can bite off more than we can chew and spread ourselves too thin. It’s important that we occasionally take the time to reflect, evaluate and consider how we can simplify our life.

It can be a real challenge to maintain a healthy balance between our personal and professional lives. A demanding work schedule and priorities can very easily eat into precious personal and family time. It can make keeping in touch with friends challenging and leave limited time for physical exercise, relaxation and fun.

Pursuing work goals may bring great material reward, recognition and satisfaction. However, having to make significant personal sacrifices to achieve work goals combined with poor life balance can lead to feelings of unhappiness and a lack of personal fulfilment.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of saying yes to every request for help and assistance. This can mean we feel over-burdened, stressed and anxious. It can leave us to wonder how we will complete all the tasks we have. Our brains can get foggy, unable to see clearly and focus on what is truly important to us.

When we simplify our life and aim to keep things simple, it helps us to feel more in control. To get to simplicity, we have to sharpen our focus. Excellent focus brings greater clarity and helps us to truly understand what is most important to us. As Leonardo Da Vinci once said “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

When we are focused, we are clearer about our choices, make better decisions and become more efficient.

Here are a few thoughts on how to simplify your life: –

  • Review the amount of time you spend at work. Consider if you can streamline your tasks and procedures to increase efficiency and free up some valuable personal time.
  • Don’t put things off. If you can complete something in two minutes or less, seize the moment and do it immediately.
  • Simplify your mind by going for a daily walk or run. Exercise in the evening helps to process the day’s events and draws out useful insights.
  • Review your relationships. Be honest about which relationships energise you and which drain you. Review how you spend your time and reduce the amount spent with negative influences.
  • Regular meditation or mindfulness sessions help to calm the mind and keep it uncluttered. Just ten minutes a day will make a difference. Write any insights you gain in a journal.

You may also wish to consider decluttering your work space and home environment and might want to let go of items that you no longer need, want or love.

An approach many people use to determine whether to keep possessions is to hold something and ask “Does this bring me joy?” if the answer is no, they release it from their life. Alternatively, you can ask yourself “Do I really need this?”  If the answer is no then let it go.

Clutter can affect us on a physical level, make us feel overwhelmed and have a negative impact on our energy levels. We can waste valuable time searching for things.

It can weigh us down, make us procrastinate and keep us stuck in the past. When our life is full of clutter “We can’t see the wood for the trees.” There’s no room for anything new. Disposal of clutter leads to fresh outcomes.

When doing a decluttering exercise (and after you’ve decided what needs to be kept/stored), I suggest you put your stuff in various piles:

  • Items/articles that need to be repaired.
  • Things to be thrown away or sent for recycling.
  • Paperwork to be shredded.
  • Items to give to others/charity.
  • Possessions to be sold.

Clearing clutter isn’t just about letting go of the belongings but the feelings and fear that keep us holding onto an excess of stuff. Life is constantly changing, so when something comes into our life, we must enjoy it, use it well and when it’s time, let it go so that we can experience new things.

This week, why not pause for a few moments to reflect and consider what you can do to simplify your life.

How can you create greater harmony in your life?

“Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do are in harmony.” Mahatma Gandhi.

It’s sad that there is so much negativity, disagreement and conflict in the world. Opinions seem to be getting more and more polarised. I believe the world needs to move to a more harmonious state. When there’s greater harmony, people are more peaceful and tend to agree with each other more. It means that things seem to be right in the world and perspectives seem to be more balanced.

Some of the challenges in the world are outside of our sphere of control and influence. It’s difficult for us to persuade people with deeply held beliefs and views to look at things in a different way and maybe see things from other people’s perspectives.

Whilst we may not be able to influence some of the cultural and political conflicts, we can seek to ensure that we help to create and promote harmony in the environments we operate in and in our relationships.

We are the conductors of our own life and the relationships we have are like an orchestra. When all the instruments are in sync, tuned and in harmony with one another it creates a great sound. When one instrument happens to be out of tune, it has a negative impact on the sound and things become discordant.

It’s important that we spend time ensuring that we are in harmony with those important people in our life. On occasions we also need to take some time out to ensure that we are in tune with ourselves. This includes ensuring that our actions are aligned with our values and beliefs. When they are, life flows effortlessly and we feel at peace.

Creating harmony in groups requires effort, commitment and practice. When you’re able to encourage and influence a group of people to be in harmony then they become a very powerful unit.

We create greater harmony in our relationships by accepting people as they are rather than how we would like them to be.

We can reinforce this by encouraging people to express their unique talents and grow and evolve in the way that they wish to.

When we show greater empathy and compassion towards people, we automatically signal our desire for peaceful and harmonious relationships. Different opinions and points of view can be aired in this way without things becoming too heated or tense. We also create more harmony by releasing our expectations about the standards we expect people to follow. When we do this, we don’t set ourselves up for disappointment further down the line.

Harmony in relationships also flows from having an intention to create clarity in communication. We do this by committing to developing an understanding of where people are coming from rather than sticking to our own point of view rigidly. When we are inflexible in our thinking and approach, we can fall into the trap of always thinking “I’m right, you’re wrong.” Quite often there isn’t a right or wrong just a different perspective and view.

Business and teams can be challenging. However, an approach that often helps to promote greater team spirit and harmony is to encourage people to leave their egos at the door of meeting rooms.

We can adopt an open mind to projects, goals and relationships. In doing so, we soak up knowledge and carry the assumption that we don’t know everything. By being curious we ask questions to develop our knowledge and to learn.

When conflict does arise in teams, we can navigate it calmly by listening deeply to what people have to say and asking questions to get to the heart of what they are feeling and thinking.

Imagine how the world would be positively transformed if we were all to make a commitment to create more harmony in it.

This week, why not pause for a moment to reflect. Consider what action you can take to create and promote greater harmony in your relationships and life in general.
