Ten tips to help you to Be First Class in 2025

“It is better to be a first-rate version of yourself than a second-rate version of somebody else.” Judy Garland.

A New Year is almost upon us. Whilst some events we encounter next year will be outside our control, our reaction to them will be within our control. These reactions and the choices we make will determine the outcomes we experience in life. It’s vital that we all take 100% responsibility for our choices and that we maintain a focus on the things that we can control.

Below are 10 tips to help you to Be First Class in 2025.

  1. Have a clear vision for your personal and professional life and create your own definition of happiness and success.

Get clear on what you want and would like to experience and achieve. This will allow you to live life your way and provide a framework for you to review your personal progress.

  1. Quit comparing yourself to others

This will save a lot of mental energy and focus. Have you ever compared yourself to someone else and found them to be exactly the same as you? We are all unique.

  1. Spend more time in the present moment

Quit worrying about the past or living life too far in the future. Don’t let yesterday take up too much of today.

  1. Be discerning with the use of your time and energy

Ensure that you do things that make you feel good and increase your energy. Spend time with people that increase rather than drain your energy.

  1. Develop an attitude of gratitude

Take time regularly to really appreciate all that you have in your life and give thanks. Remember to celebrate your successes, achievements and good fortune. Count your blessings often.

  1. Trust your instincts

If your instincts say be brave and go for it, listen to that wisdom. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. If your intuition is telling you to be careful than heed that warning.

  1. Put yourself first sometimes

Learn to say no and know when you need to recharge your energy levels. Take care of your needs first. Remember the safety announcement on a plane tells passengers to put their oxygen mask on first in an emergency, so they can help others!

  1. Remember that life is short and enjoy the simple things in life

Do what makes you happy and are passionate about. Follow your dreams, spend time with those you love and remember that quite often the best things in life are free.

  1. Be impeccable with your word and be yourself (everyone else is taken).

Say only what you mean and promise only what you will fulfil. Speak with integrity and avoid negative language and gossip. Be true to yourself and your values.

  1. Be kind

Doing unconditional and unexpected random acts of kindness for others create good feelings. They can be simple gestures and don’t have to cost money. Such good deeds help to create a better world. Have a kind and generous spirit.

I hope that you’ve found these suggestions to be useful and they help you to experience the best possible year.

This week, why not spend a few moments to think about which of the tips that you would like to focus more attention on next year.

Happy New Year, I hope that 2025 is a happy, healthy and fulfilling one for you.

Focusing on abundance helps to increase your appreciation of life

“I try to be grateful for the abundance of the blessings that I have, for the journey that I’m on and to relish each day as a gift.” James McGreevey.

It’s almost Christmas Day, a time for joy and celebration. Sadly, whilst we take time to celebrate today, there is some gloom and doom around in the world at present. I am referring to the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. It’s sad to see the loss and suffering of so many innocent people. As a result, watching news bulletins can make us feel quite miserable.

We can’t control the issues being reported on but we can control our reactions to them. In an effort to counter some of the negativity that we are all exposed to on a daily basis, I make a conscious effort to think in an abundant way.

An abundant mindset is when you believe that there are enough resources for us all and you have greater appreciation for all that you have. When you think about life in this way, it takes on another meaning and has a different look and feel to it. I have noticed that my shift in thinking has made me feel lighter and more positive.

In life we have a choice about where we put our attention. We can focus on our weaknesses, our limitations, lack of opportunities and what’s missing in our life. We can have a lack of appreciation for our material possessions and what we’ve earned. This can be combined with not fully appreciating the people in our life and what they bring to us.

In contrast we can choose to focus our time and mind in an abundant way and appreciate all that we have including our possessions and the contributions people make to enrich our life. We can have gratitude for our natural strengths and talents, the opportunities and all the experiences that we have. In this state we will view any challenges we’ve encountered as a lesson or insight instead of a chance to see ourselves as a victim.

The mindset we choose to adopt will have an impact on our body and energy. When we think abundantly, we feel more optimistic and this helps us to feel lighter and more energised. As a result, we’re more likely to attract positive circumstances as our self-talk will be more empowering and drive positive behaviours which help to create great results.

Conversely, a scarcity mindset will have a negative impact on our mood and energy levels. Our bodies will feel heavy; our self-talk will be negative and create dis-empowering behaviours and poor results. This kind of mindset can be a self-fulfilling prophecy and create more results that reinforce a feeling of lack.

Thinking in an abundant way contributes to a feeling of security. It helps us to feel confident and have high self-worth levels. As a result, we feel secure when interacting with others. We form positive relationships, where we look to be collaborative rather than overly competitive and create “win/win” scenarios. Adopting this mindset doesn’t prevent us from feeling empathy for other people’s suffering and for those less fortunate than ourselves.

In contrast when we have feelings of lack, we may have difficulty sharing credit or recognising the contribution of others. The scarcity mentality is limiting and may mean that too much time and energy is wasted on conflict, negative thinking and repressing creativity. On the other hand, the abundant mentality is fearless; it’s free and immune to criticism.

In order to feel abundant, we need to get better at noticing and recognising what’s available to us in terms of opportunities, resources and choices. We aren’t wired to notice things or be particularly observant.

It doesn’t make us stupid if we fail to notice things, it just depends on what our brain has been primed to see. If we focus on scarcity, we will find evidence to support this. If we want to notice abundance, we will find it.

As I said earlier, we can’t control all events. However, we can choose our reaction, the attitude we adopt in the present moment and where we place our attention. We get what we look for! What we choose to focus on grows.

I send my very best wishes to you and your family and wish you all a very joyous and happy Christmas period.

This week, why not take a few moments to reflect and consider which mindset you adopt the majority of the time. Are you thinking in an abundant way? Do you regularly notice things to appreciate?

It’s good to regularly review how you are using your energy

“The worst times can be the best if you think with positive energy.” Domenico Dolce.

In last week’s blog, I suggested that you take some time out to reflect, to review this year and plan your goals for 2025. Another important area to regularly review is how you are investing your energy.

This is a particularly busy time of year and there are many demands on our time and energy levels in the build up to the festive season. There is increased shopping to do, social gatherings, potentially increased travel and work demands ahead of the year end. We only have a finite amount of time and energy and it’s important to invest it wisely.

As I get older, I’ve noticed that I’m becoming more discerning with how I invest my energy and who I spend my time with. I don’t know about you but when I am around the vibe given off by pessimistic, complaining and negative people it starts to have a real impact on my energy levels. My body starts to feel heavy; I feel tired and drained.

I know that some people have real challenges and problems to deal with from time to time and that life isn’t always a bed of roses. It isn’t always easy to remain upbeat in the face of difficulty and adversity. I’m one of the first in line to offer a sympathetic ear or support and help to friends and family with genuine challenges and problems to solve.

What I am referring to above is a particular breed of human beings, those that are very self-centred. You’ve probably come across these people yourself.  They believe that “Every silver lining has a cloud.” They refer constantly to their problems and don’t consider looking for solutions.

Quite often they have much to be thankful and grateful for but they don’t recognise this. They choose to think about what they lack rather than the abundance and riches they do have.

I’m sure that you know or have met people like this. When you ask them how they are, they hunch their shoulders and say something like “Fair to grim.” They then launch into a detailed account of their troubles and difficulties.

I refer to them as “drains or energy vampires” because they suck the life out of you with their negativity and stories of how life is unfair! More frequently, I am choosing to give them a wide berth.

Conversely, I’ve noticed that when I’m around positive people (those that give off a positive vibe) with a “can do” attitude and solutions orientated approach, I feel lighter, energised and happier. I refer to these people as “radiators” as they are full of warmth, radiance and brightness. They have zest, vitality and they make the most of the hand that life deals them.

When you ask them how they are, they look you in the eye and they smile and say something positive and uplifting. They have a sense of gratitude and appreciation for what they have in life.

There’s an exercise that you can do to become more discerning with how you use your time and energy. Take a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle and title the left-hand column positive and the right-hand column negative.

Then think about the people that you interact with and ask yourself these questions:

  • What people give me energy?
  • What people drain my energy?
  • What tasks give me energy?
  • What tasks drain my energy?

Make a note of your responses under the relevant columns and review the findings.  You can then spend some time reflecting on what you’ve written.

The exercise may reveal to you:

  • Changes you need to make to the amount of time you spend with some people.
  • Insights about some of the tasks you’re involved with. It may suggest you need to stop doing some tasks or spend more time doing others.
  • That you need to consider if there is an opportunity for other people to take responsibility for some tasks you currently perform.

Life is very precious and it’s so important that we spend our time and energy wisely and in ways that enrich it and allow us to fulfil our potential.

This week, why not take a few moments to reflect and consider what changes you would like to make to how invest your energy.
